A Stable, Secure Fit with Custom Dentures
You may be considering dentures if you are missing several teeth or you need to restore an entire dental arch. Advancements in restorative dentistry mean today's dentures are more secure and lifelike than ever before. At Larsen Family Dental, Dr. Paul C. Larsen can provide you with the right solution based on your unique needs and budget. We offer partial and full traditional restorations, as well as implant-supported dentures at our Bountiful, UT, practice.
Types of Dentures
Dr. Larsen is proud to offer a range of custom-made dentures for his patients, which include:
Traditional Full Dentures
Full dentures consist of a pink plastic base and a full set of artificial teeth that can replace both the entire upper or lower dental arch. These dentures are kept in place with dental adhesives and natural suction, and rest atop the gums. This type of restoration is a cost-effective option for patients missing all or most of their teeth. If you require the extraction of a damaged tooth, Dr. Larsen can place your custom-made dentures in the same office visit.
Traditional Partial Dentures
Also known as a bridge, this type of denture is often recommended for patients missing several adjacent teeth. Traditional partial dentures are typically held in place by metal clips which attach to nearby teeth.
Dental implants provide a secure foundation for dentures, as well as protect your oral health by preventing jawbone atrophy.
Implant-supported dental prosthetics are considered the gold standard in restorative dentistry. This type of denture is secured by dental implants, which are small titanium or zirconia posts surgically inserted into your jaw bone, effectively replacing lost tooth roots. Implant-supported restorations are the most secure denture option, as you can speak freely and eat the foods you love without the risk of slippage.
Dr. Larsen also offers the advanced All-on-4® surgical technique to restore your lower arch without the need for preparatory procedures such as bone grafting. In just one office visit, Dr. Larsen can place four specially designed implants that are inserted at an angle. Your doctor will then attach a temporary denture for you to wear while the implants fuse with your jawbone. After the healing period, Dr. Larsen will attach your custom-made permanent denture to the implants, restoring the functionality and aesthetics of your smile.
Designing and Placing Dentures
When you come in for your initial consultation, Dr. Larsen will conduct an examination and help you choose the right type of denture based on your lifestyle needs and budget. If you choose a traditional denture, your dentist will take impressions of your dental arches and any remaining teeth which are sent to our trusted lab, where technicians will create your custom restoration. If you choose implant-supported dentures, you will need to have the posts placed during a surgical procedure. After the implants have fused with the bone, roughly four to six months later, abutments will be attached to the posts and impressions will be taken to create your permanent restoration. In both cases, you will have the option to receive temporary dentures in the meantime.
Weighing Your Treatment Options
There are several benefits provided by implant-supported dentures that traditional prostheses simply cannot match. The greatest benefit is the ability to mimic the function of dental roots and prevent jawbone atrophy, which is common after tooth loss. While traditional dentures require the use of clasps or dental adhesives to keep them in place, implants provide a permanent, sturdy base for your restoration. Patients who wear traditional dentures may experience shifting when the support methods fail, which can impair speech or the ability to eat nutritious foods.
