When left untreated, missing teeth can lead to ongoing oral and overall health problems, including misalignment, malnutrition, and a lack of self-confidence.
To help patients with missing teeth improve their quality of life, we offer state-of-the-art dental implants at Larsen Family Dental.
Wondering why dental implants are considered the gold standard in restorative dentistry?
Implant Dentistry: The Only Way to Stop Bone Loss
Missing or severely damaged teeth can lead to a host of problems, including jawbone atrophy. Because implants effectively mimic the function of natural tooth roots, they can not only provide unparalleled support for dental restorations but also prevent further jawbone degeneration by stimulating the bone tissue in the same way that your natural tooth roots can. This feature sets dental implants apart from other restorative solution.
More Information About Dental Implants
Tooth loss can affect more than just your overall appearance. The condition can also detract from your ability to smile with confidence, speak clearly, and eat the foods you love. Dental implants, small posts that are surgically embedded into the jawbone, are considered the gold standard in modern restorative dentistry. If you have lost one or more teeth due to gum disease, decay, or advancing age, implants placed at Larsen Family Dental can replace your lost tooth roots and serve as a secure foundation for a variety of custom-made prosthetics such as crowns, bridges, and dentures. To meet a range of needs, Dr. Paul C. Larsen offers his patients the choice of both titanium and zirconia dental implants at his Bountiful, UT, practice.
When you come in for an initial consultation at Larsen Family Dental, Dr. Larsen will conduct a thorough examination to determine your eligibility for implants. Candidates should be in good oral and general health, and if your dentist discovers periodontal disease or another oral health concern, you will first need to undergo treatment for those conditions. For example, if a tooth is severely damaged, Dr. Larsen can extract it in order to replace it with an implant-supported restoration at a later stage. Our patients typically find that over-the-counter anti-inflammatories are sufficient in controlling any discomfort after an extraction.
Dental implant-supported restorations provide the most aesthetic and functionally effective solution to tooth loss.
You may need to undergo preparatory procedures such as a sinus lift or bone graft in order to become eligible for implants. If you have been missing teeth for some time, you may have experienced jawbone atrophy. Since a weakened jaw cannot support an implant, Dr. Larsen can perform bone graft surgery to strengthen the treatment area. After a graft or sinus lift, patients will need six to nine months to heal before proceeding with additional treatment. Once healing is complete from any prerequisite procedures, patients can undergo surgery to place the implants.
Dental Implants Surgery
Treatment with traditional dental implants generally consists of three steps. You will receive an anesthetic before the initial surgery, and can choose to receive sedation to further ensure your comfort. We offer both nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Next, Dr. Larsen will create incisions in the gums and skillfully place the implant posts in your jaw.
It generally takes four to six months for the implants to integrate with your jaw, through a process called osseointegration. You may be given temporary restorations to wear during this time. You should not smoke during the healing period, and drink alcohol in moderation to facilitate successful integration.
When you have healed completely, you will return for a second, minor surgery, during which the dentist will attach abutment pieces to the implants. During the time that the gum tissue heals around the abutments, your custom-made permanent restoration will be fabricated. During the final visit, Dr. Larsen will connect your permanent crown, bridge, or denture to the abutment, fully restoring your smile.
For patients who have suffered bone recession who do not want to undergo a bone graft procedure, the All-on-4® treatment method can be an effective solution for replacing missing teeth on the lower arch. Unlike traditional implant-supported dentures that require a larger number of posts, the All-on-4® technique uses just four implants. The posts are placed at an angle to minimize the impact to surrounding tissue and patients can immediately receive a restoration during the same appointment.
